The resurgence in the home grown craft market in the last few years is seeing fleece playing a pivotal role.  With the impact of the Campaign for Wool interest in fleece as an easily accessible and useful fibre is growing. Wool festivals now attract in excess of 50,000 wool loving visitors nearly every weekend in the UK and British woollen cloth manufacturing has an increased market value of £40 million in the last 5 years. 

 

At Gentleman Farmer we want the farmers to get the recognition they deserve for rearing good wool particularly as the market increases are driven by bespoke products demanding an exemplary provenance of the supply chains used. People want to feel a connection with the landscape, the people and the sheep who grew their fibre.

 

The British Wool Marketing Board serves a useful purpose but we believe there should also be alternative options for selling good fleece that recognise and meet the needs of the farmer as well as seeking to overcome the flaws in the current system.
